at 8 months of age, this completely deaf child’s (his name is Johnathan) cochlear implant was installed and activated. this is a video recording of his first exposure to the his sense of sound.
i feel as though anything i would ever do in my line of work to help someone would pale in comparison to the gift a long line of scientists, engineers and doctors have given this child and countless others. this fills me with so much joy, i do not know how to describe it. i think my heart is going to explode.

A camera makes the rounds at a local sushi restaurant in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan. The pace is perfect; just when you think it’s going to get tedious, the camera gets nudged into a different part of the restaurant. Each reaction is priceless, including the kitchen staff near the end.
